St Lucia renames stadium in honour of Darren Sammy

The Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia will be renamed as the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, following West Indies' dramatic World Twenty20 title win in India. The announcement was made in St Lucia at a welcome reception organised by the prime minister Kenny D Anthony to honour locals Darren Sammy and Johnson Charles. In addition to the stadium's name change, one of the stands will be renamed in honour of Charles, who is also due to a receive a plot of land.
"I am truly honoured, I am humbled and blessed," Sammy, who became the only captain to win the World T20 twice, said. "Thank you, we always know St. Lucians love their own and the love and respect and admiration I have just received at the airport, oh my God, thank you very much".
The Beausejour Stadium, situated on the outskirts of the tourist resort area of Rodney Bay, has hosted international matches since 2002. In 2006, the stadium became the first ground in the West Indies to stage a floodlight ODI when Zimbabwe were the visitors. The stadium has a seating capacity of 15,000 including 18 hospitality suites and a modern pavilion that offers each team its own gym, lounge, balcony and conference room. It last hosted an international game in September 2014 - the second Test
between West Indies and Bangladesh.
"Both are fitting tributes to the hard work and dedication of the players who just completed an exciting victory to win the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 Men's title. The honour is fitting, and we salute the players," the WICB said in a statement.

World T20 semi-final-2

Though the hosts are the favourites to emerge triumphant in this knockout clash, Shastri is not taking the opposition lightly. "I have said that from the beginning. Probably, (West Indies are) one of the most dangerous sides in this format," Shastri said at a media conference on Wednesday (March 30). "They have got explosive players, match-winners. We know what we are up against. We are up and ready as well. This is not a knockout for us. Knockout was last game (versus Australia). That was a quarter-final and this is a semi-final," he added. Yesterday (March 29), West Indies' explosive opener Chris Gayle had said India are favourites in the semi-final. "India have come back with three wins after being one down. There have the momentum, there is no doubt about that and a lot of confidence coming into the semi-final game as well. It is very difficult to pinpoint one particular player in the Indian team. It is a very good all-round team, good fielding team as well," Gayle said. "That's why India are the favourites. It is always going to be difficult to beat them here. But like I said, West Indies are ready for an upset," he added.

England won by 7 wkts

Was it the nerves of a big pressure game? Or did New Zealand just peak too early in the tournament? Whatever it be, there is no denying that England were up for it today. The way they put the squeeze on in the middle overs and restricted the Kiwis to a below par score, that was where the momentum shifted in a massive way. From being knocked out in the first round of the ODI World Cup, to making it to the final here, they've really come a long way. So, that's that from this one. Tomorrow will see India taking on the West Indies at the Wankhede. But we still have around 20 hours and 30 minutes..29 minutes..28.....Yeah, to keep it simple - I can't wait. This is Sagar Chawla signing off on behalf of Krishna, Pratyush Sinha, Sriram and my co-commentators Akshay Maanay, Ramakrishnan and Pradeep. Bring on tomorrow!

"England have a good chance of winning if they bat first" - Virender Sehwag

It promises to be quite an exciting match, doesn't it? New Zealand's bowlers vs England's batsmen. The tactical underplay to the whole match. Both teams have had success adopting contrasting tactics so far. While New Zealand have banked on their relatively inexperienced spinners, in a horses for courses policy, England have gone with the stick to your strengths in all conditions style. And so they've managed to get this far purely by banking on their pace attack but it's their batsmen who have managed to create a real impact in the tournament so far.

New Zealand's success with spinners is something that the people haven't had enough about. So much so that their batsmen have been pushed to the back seat. But they pack quite a punch with the bat too and the conditions in Delhi ought to be much better for batting than some of the pitches that New Zealand have played on. It might influence their decision with spinners as well.

There have already been two double-headers at the Feroz Shah Kotla in this tournament with the pitch holding up fine for the second games. Whether that brings in Boult and Southee to New Zealand's equation remains to be seen but they will also be looking at England's susceptibility to spin.

New Zealand are unbeaten so far in the tournament - the only such team - and it an indicator of how successful they've been with their planning and execution. England, on the other hand, have three consecutive wins - all hard fought - and that puts them in a good stead with the confidence factor but is also an indicator that they aren't quite the finished product yet in this format.

But the format is a fickle one. England have the fire-power to outscore New Zealand but can they do so against in-form spinners? There's a sell-out crowd expected in Delhi for the game and it does promise to be an entertaining one as all the questions get answered.

Virat Kohli pips Finch to top T20I batting rankings

Virat Kohli has pipped Aaron Finch to claim top spot in the International Cricket Council's Twenty20 Batting Rankings, an ICC media release stated on Tuesday (March 29). The star Indian batsman, who scored a match-winning 82 not out in the virtual quarterfinal against Australia in Mohali on Sunday, traded places with the Australian opener following a productive Super 10 phase in the ongoing World T20, where he scored 184 runs, including a 55 against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Kohli had entered the tournament 24 points behind Finch, but has now opened up a 68-point advantage over the Australian. New Zealand's Martin Guptill climbed up two places to occupy the third spot while Joe Root, the England stroke-maker, gained 105 points to reach a career-high 11th.
While Kohli moved up to the top pot in the batting charts, his teammate Ravichandran Ashwin dropped two places down to third in the bowling rankings, after managing only four wickets from as many games. The benefactor of Ashwin's lukewarm show so far in the World T20 was Samuel Badree, the West Indian leg spinner, who rose to top of the rankings table after claiming six wickets during his team's run to the semifinals of the tournament. Imran Tahir, the South African spinner, retained his second spot.
Meanwhile, Australia's Shane Watson signed off from international cricket as the number-one ranked all-rounder. In the batting charts, the burly all-rounder finished in 10th spot (up by three places) after scoring 96 runs, while he has ended up in 29th spot (up by five places) in the bowlers' list after taking five wickets in four matches.
India, however, continue to top the rankings for teams, followed closely by New Zealand and West Indies.

It's over! Stokes bowls an oh so important dot ball with a superb Yorker to leave Sri Lanka needing two sixes and, needless to say, it’s beyond them. Two more dot balls later and England are through to play New Zealand in the semi-finals!

AB De Villiers and Morris shine as Proteas seal first win

Batting first, South Africa dropped Dale Steyn and enjoyed a good start provided by Quinton de Kock (45). In the middle of the order, Faf du Plessis (41) chipped in with runs too before AB de Villiers upped the ante by hitting 64 runs from 29 balls including dispatching one over for 29 runs. At the end, South Africa ended with 209 runs – yet another 200+ score. In reply, Shahzad gave the Afghans belief with 44 runs from 19 balls but no one really reciprocated the effort. Proteas seamers Morris, Abbott and Rabada did the job to keep Afghanistan and bay to win by 37 runs.

Australia will start its quest for the elusive ICC World Twenty20 crown when it takes on New Zealand on Friday (March 18) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.

Australia is No. 1 in the ICC Test rankings and won a record fifth World Cup title in the 50-over format last year but is yet to conquer the World T20. It has made the final only once, in 2010 when it lost to England.

New Zealand is on a high after stunning India in the opening game of the Super 10 stage on Tuesday in Nagpur, but Steven Smith's side will take confidence from the fact that it defeated New Zealand in the final of the 50-over ICC World Cup 2015.

More significantly, Australia has a massive advantage over New Zealand in the head-to-head stats in the 20-over format, having won four of the five matches the two sides have played. Australia's only loss, in 2010, came in a Super Over.

Shane Watson, however, stressed that there was no guarantee of another win, especially after New Zealand's 47-run win over India.

"We are going to have to play very well because they are going to be very confident leading into this game," Watson told reporters in Dharamsala on the eve of the match.

Teams (from)
New Zealand: Kane Williamson (captain), Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Martin Guptill, Grant Elliott, Colin Munro, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Adam Milne, Henry Nicholls, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.
Australia: Steven Smith (captain), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, John Hastings, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Peter Nevill, Andrew Tye, Shane Watson, Adam Zampa.

Energised England prepare different script

Eoin Morgan is a man who revels in inscrutability, but as he strode from the nets at the Wankhede Stadium, it was possible to detect a glint of satisfaction in his eyes. The project of which he has been at the helm for little over a year now embarks on its acid test at 7.30pm on Wednesday evening. Whatever the outcome, few doubt that England, finally, are ready to fizz.
On his way to the changing rooms, Morgan paused to pose with a giant England flag bearing a range of good luck messages from fans who sense that something is changing in their country's attitude to limited-overs cricket. The misery of England's eviction from the 2015 World Cup is a sufficiently recent memory that few would dare to get too carried away. And yet, there's no doubt that something is stirring. And, clearly, not before time.
"I think this feels different because we've a different group of players," Morgan said. "It's a new energy, it's an exciting time for English cricket given the talent that we have in our group, and the attitude in taking the game to the opposition. It certainly feels different in that regard."
The most fundamental shift, Morgan added, is that his post-World Cup England team has offloaded the reticence of the former regime and is now brave enough to "play with no consequences". It's an attitude that, as he has previously intimated, could go some way to surmounting their lack of experience in Indian conditions. And to that end, he insists that defeat against a hugely experienced West Indies team would not be the "be-all and end-all".
"Going into any tournament, it's not about getting out of the traps early and playing your best game first up," he said. "It's about pacing yourself and picking up confidence and putting in performances when they really matter. [But] the first game is a tough game - I do agree with that."
West Indies, with wearying familiarity, come into the World T20 to a back-beat of politics and infighting, and yet, with the exception of the injured Kieron Pollard and the blacklisted Sunil Narine, all of their big guns are back out in force for one last tilt at a title that they won in some style only two editions ago.
No fewer than eight of the West Indies squad are IPL veterans (compared to the solitary figure of Morgan in England's camp), and in Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo, West Indies possess two of the most established matchwinners the format has ever known. That is sufficient reason for Morgan to embrace the role of the underdog, and his dead-batted lack of interest in his opponents' recent issues merely reinforced that position.
"They have a number of dangerous players," Morgan said. "West Indies have been a strong side in the past. They have a number of individual players who are very strong. It's important for us as a young talented side to focus on what we do best and execute that as part of anything. There are plans in place, but ultimately it's how we execute them."
Those plans, on what for the moment remains a green-tinged Mumbai surface, look set to revolve around a four-pronged pace attack, with the allrounder Ben Stokes creating wriggle-room in England's bowling options. Reece Topley is sure to take the new ball and Chris Jordan is set to continue his death-bowling duties following the success of his Yorkers in England's warm-up matches. Which leaves a toss-up between the height and pace of Liam Plunkett or the left-arm wiles of David Willey for England's final slot.
"You can keep guessing," Morgan joked. "If you could guess me a few winners at Cheltenham today that'd be great as well."
Of the two, it is Willey who has had the more impact in the course of England's preparations. His hat-trick while playing for the opposition down the road at the Brabourne Stadium on Monday provided a late varnish to figures that had been somewhat dented at the top of the innings. Plunkett, by contrast, has bowled four overs in two games, and was dumped for 19 in his solitary effort against New Zealand, although his hostility could be vital if the Wankhede pitch has any sort of pace and carry.
"Wills swings it up front, comes back into middle and bowls change-ups," Morgan added. "He has a canny knack of taking wickets, which is something that we've struggled doing for a while. But given the circumstances of any pitch, whether it's two-paced or quick, [Plunkett] is an important player in the squad, with his extra bit of height and different trajectory to everyone else."
If there is one area in which England appear to have an edge over their opponents, it is in the skill and confidence of their legspinner Adil Rashid. His huge development at Adelaide Strikers during the Big Bash is
